Anita Daddario Greene, age 89, passed away on Friday, July, 19, 2002 at Pine Run Community Health Center in Doylestown, PA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Sidney Greene and her beloved sisters, Mary Daddario D'Amico and Ida Daddario Napoli . She is survived by her sons Robert T. and Richard H. Greene, her sister Lydia Daddario Kozak, her brother, Frank Daddario, her beloved grandchildren, Rebecca E. Greene Van Horn, Kiersten A., Amalia K., Christina A., and Andrew D. Greene, her niece, Janet Kulis, her grand-nieces Kim and Lindsay Kulis and Alexandra Kozak, and her grand nephew, Jeanne-Pierre Kozak.

Raised in Astoria, NY, Mrs. Greene completed Nurses training at Brooklyn Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in 1934. Improving her knowledge of and ability to practice her profession were her lifelong career objectives. She obtained a public health certificate and other advanced training which enabled to her to incorporate changing trends in nursing during a period of dynamic change in the field.

Her 55+ year career touched a broad spectrum of nursing activities including acute care, public health, school, industrial, Red Cross Blood Bank and summer camp nursing. She willingly and tirelessly gave of herself in time of need with her caring presence and knowledge. She would often venture into the night when summoned. In her retirement she continued to apply her training with volunteer work at hypertension screening clinics and in nursing homes.

A proponent of simple and sensible nutritional practices long before the advent of the health food stores and chic nutritional supplements, she educated herself and raised the concept of a tasty, but balanced diet to an art form. Many who enjoyed her culinary offerings needed no encouragement to eat their vegetables. Not forgetting that a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down, she was known to venture into the confection realm with equal vigor, preparing cookies, cakes and desserts of unparalleled quality. Especially noteworthy were her traditional Italian "pizzelles" which she made the old-fashioned way in church-bazaar-sized lots.

A woman of steadfast Christian faith, Mrs. Greene was active in her church community as a member and past president of the Women's Society of Christian Service of St. Paul's First Italian Methodist Church and as the health and welfare committee chairperson of the Church of the Good Shepard, both in Astoria, New York.

Mrs. Greene was particularly adept at drawing people out and putting them at their ease. Seldom did she sit next to a stranger on a train or plane without learning a good deal about them while passing the time in small talk. She was a wartime bride, marrying a survivor of the December 7th Pearl Harbor attack in 1943 and bearing her first son in the shadow of wartime uncertainty. As a widow and single parent in the early 1950's, Mrs. Greene raised her two sons in the bosom of her birth family. She played a pivotal role in this multi-generational extended group with love and a pleasant demeanor, always looking ahead to anticipate its needs and coordinate its activities.

In her declining years, she was lovingly cared for by the staff of Pine Run who universally recognized her special qualities and treated her like family. A memorial service was held in her honor at the Church of the Good Shepard in Astoria, NY, where more than 50 gathered, including family and friends. The family has requested that memorial gifts in lieu of flowers be directed toward the nursing scholarship fund of a hospital or instutution of higher learning of your choice or the music program of your place of worship.

Anita's Favorite Hymn

In The Garden
- Words & Music: C. Austin Miles, 1913

I come to the garden alone
While the dew is still on the roses
And the voice I hear falling on my ear
The Son of God discloses.

Refrain

And He walks with me, and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.

He speaks, and the sound of His voice,
Is so sweet the birds hush their singing,
And the melody that He gave to me
Within my heart is ringing.

Refrain

I stay in the garden with Him
Though the night around me be falling,
But He bids me go; through the voice of woe
His voice to me is calling.

Refrain
