Get the Credit You Deserve Check Your Employment(Service) Credit The amount of your pension is directly related to your years of public service. Public service means you are an employee or officer with an employer that participates in a public retirement system in New York State. When you work for a public employer in New York State, you can receive what is called service credit. One year of full-time employment is the same as one year of service credit. However, if you worked for a public employer and were part of another retirement system prior to joining our System, we probably dont have a record of that work history in our files. While we keep records for all of our members from the date they join, we have no way of knowing if and when our members previously worked for a public employer. If you have, you may be able to receive credit for this time. For example, if you worked for a public employer that participates in our System but did not join, you could get credit for this time. You can also obtain credit if you are/were a member of any of the following systems: New York State and Local Employees Retirement System (ERS) New York State and Local Police and Fire Retirement System (PFRS) New York State Teachers Retirement System (NYSTRS) New York City Employees Retirement System (NYCERS) New York City Teachers Retirement System (NYCTRS) New York City Police Pension Fund (NYCPPF) New York City Fire Department Pension Fund (NYCFDPF) New York City Board of Education Retirement System (NYCBERS) For more information on previous service credit, see our booklet, Service Credit for Tier 2, 3 and 4 Members, and the Getting Credit for Your Service, information on our website. Military Service Credit If you worked for a public employer within New York State directly before and after your service in the United States military, you may be able to get credit for your military service. In addition, veterans who served in certain combat theaters or during certain periods of wartime may purchase and receive credit for some or all of their military service. Check the Military Service Credit information on our website to see which military conflicts are covered under this provision.
